I dont know what happened to Max. When I met him he was a sweet, big-eyed kid who was going to help change the whole world. You introduced us. We even talked about joining the Peace Corps together. What a fucking laugh. The only thing that Max ever changed was himself. He quit being a sweet, big-eyed kid and made himself hard and cynical and tough-minded. That was one of his favorite words. Tough-minded. He found out he liked to manipulate people. He was good at it. He manipulated me. I didnt mind. I knew what he was doing. But other people didnt like it and after a while they didn’t like Max. I think they were afraid of him. He didn’t seem to care. Politics suited him. It gave him a chance to manipulate people. After a while, that was about all he cared about. He didn’t even care who he worked for. He even talked about working for Wallace once, but then Wallace got shot, and that fell through. He thought working for Wallace would be a joke. When I asked him who the joke would be on he said it would be on him. Max, I mean. Then he started going into these funny deals. I don’t know what they were. He never told me. But one time he brought home ten thousand dollars in a paper sack and dumped it in my lap. He wouldn’t tell me where he got it. He said it was just a deal he’d pulled off. He was always going to pull off a big deal. He was talking about it just before he got killed. It was going to be the biggest deal of all. He was going to retire at thirty-eight and we were going to take the kids and go to Europe. He seemed excited about it. We even went to bed together, which we hadn’t done in God knows when. It was going to be a big, big deal. He was going to make two hundred thousand dollars, maybe more. Then he got killed and there wasn’t anybig deal. There was just Max dead and six hundred and fifty-three dollars and thirty-two cents in the bank. I’m going to kill myself, Harvey, I really am. Devine, for reasons he could not entirely understand, believed the man, because everything with Cowl was transactional. So if the man hadnt tried to frame him, who had? You mean at the preliminary? God, youre quaint. She rose, found a carton in a cabinet, tore open a pack, and lit the long, brown cigarette with a paper match. She blew some smoke out and said, That suit. Are you supposed to be dressed up or something? Stone picked up the phone.Mr. Gunderson, what can I do for you? he asked quickly, as if he had been on another line. Okay, Drake said. Heres something else for you, Perry. Devine leaned against the wall.Youre going to need to explain that. Over here. Maybe she does know, but just didnt want to tell me the truth? She said Sara was scared. Maybe Stamos is scared, too. The Mexican woman who ran the place came to them cordially, then, as she saw the unmistakable stamp of official importance on their faces, the smile froze on her Hps. Im not connected with it. Lutts was on the board of directors of a corporation in which I have invested a fairly large amount of money. Im afraid his death may upset the balance of power. And she, I said, is a lucky woman. I dont know what I expected, but whatever it was I didnt get it. I must have assumed he was going to be the Showalter Marine type. Instead he was a pleasant-looking man in an inexpensive blue suit. He looked somewhat uncomfortable being in an upscale place like this. Where? Mason asked. Money coming in from all over the world and money going out to the Locust Group, Mayflower Enterprises, thousands of other entities. I dont believe theres enough soap in the world to do that much laundry. Over there, I said and pointed to where they were feeding the ducks. Anybody verify that? Like Dominique Deveraux? she said. You couldnt trust her, so she took a dive into the East River? I know, thats the problem. And I cant reply to it. I had an image of the River Cabins public-relations staff sitting around a conference tableà laMad Men, wondering how they were going to deal with this tragedy. The place had such a sterling reputation. Unless they acted quickly and wisely the public might start thinking the place was some kind of dive...
